Nether Portal Calculator

Type your Overworld coordinates to get the matching Nether coordinates, or the other way around. Build your portals at these exact spots and they will link.

How to link Nether portals

  1. Write down your Overworld portal coordinates. Stand inside the portal and press F3 (Java) or turn on "Show coordinates" in Bedrock world settings.
  2. Convert them. Enter X, Y and Z on the Overworld side. The calculator divides X and Z by 8 and rounds down.
  3. Build the Nether portal at those coordinates. Go through your portal, travel to the converted spot in the Nether and build a new portal there. If the game created a portal somewhere else, you can break it.
  4. Test it. Walk through the new Nether portal. You should come out of your original Overworld portal.

The formula

Overworld โ†’ Nether: Nether X = Overworld X รท 8, Nether Z = Overworld Z รท 8, rounded down.
Nether โ†’ Overworld: Overworld X = Nether X ร— 8, Overworld Z = Nether Z ร— 8.
Y stays the same in both directions.

Rounding down matters for negative numbers: โˆ’100 รท 8 = โˆ’12.5, which rounds down to โˆ’13, not โˆ’12. The calculator handles this for you.

Why portals sometimes link wrong

When you step through a portal, the game converts your position and looks for the nearest existing portal around that spot. In Java Edition the search covers 128 blocks around the target in the Overworld but only 16 blocks in the Nether. Because of the 8:1 scale, two Overworld portals that are close together can both lead to the same Nether portal. To avoid this:

  • keep Overworld portals more than 128 blocks apart from each other,
  • always build the Nether side manually at the calculated coordinates,
  • keep both portals at a similar Y level.

Using the Nether as a fast travel network

Since every block walked in the Nether counts as eight in the Overworld, a tunnel of 125 blocks in the Nether covers 1,000 blocks in the Overworld. Many players build a central Nether hub with ice boat roads to each portal. Convert each base's coordinates here, then dig straight tunnels along the X and Z axes to connect them.

Frequently asked questions

How do Nether coordinates work?

Horizontally, one block in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld. To go from the Overworld to the Nether, divide X and Z by 8. To go back, multiply by 8. The Y coordinate (height) is not scaled.

Why did my portal link to the wrong portal?

When you enter a portal, the game looks for an existing portal near the converted coordinates. In Java Edition it searches within 128 blocks in the Overworld but only 16 blocks in the Nether. If two portals are closer than that to each other, you can end up at the wrong one. Space your Overworld portals more than about 128 blocks apart and build each Nether portal at the exact calculated coordinates.

Should I build the Nether side or the Overworld side first?

Light your Overworld portal, walk through, then use this calculator and build a second portal in the Nether at the exact converted coordinates. Break the portal the game generated automatically if it is in the wrong place.

Does the Y level matter?

Linking mainly depends on X and Z, but the closest portal in 3D distance wins, so keeping both portals at a similar height helps. The Nether has a bedrock roof that starts around Y 123, so build Nether portals below that.

Does this work in Bedrock Edition?

Yes, the 8:1 ratio is the same in Java and Bedrock. The search range for existing portals can behave differently in Bedrock, so building portals at the exact coordinates is the safest approach in both editions.
