Formatting codes

Format& code§ codeWhat it doesEdition
Obfuscated&k §k Random, constantly changing charactersBoth
Bold&l §l Bold textBoth
Strikethrough&m §m Line through the textJava only
Underline&n §n Line under the textJava only
Italic&o §o Slanted textBoth
Reset&r §r Clears all colors and formattingBoth

How to combine codes

Codes apply to everything after them. Always put the color first and the formatting second: &c&l gives bold red text. If you write the formatting first (&l&c), the color code resets it and the text will not be bold. Use &r to go back to plain white text.

Where you can use color codes

Java Edition

  • Server list message (MOTD): in server.properties, using § codes or the \u00A7 escape.
  • Resource packs: in the pack.mcmeta description and in language files.
  • Commands and data packs: use JSON text in /tellraw and /title. The JSON "color" field also accepts hex values like "#FF5555", which the gradient text generator uses.
  • Chat on servers: only through plugins that accept & codes. Typing § in Java chat disconnects you.
Since Java Edition 1.21.6 you can no longer type or paste § into books.

Bedrock Edition

Bedrock is much more relaxed. § codes work in chat, signs and hanging signs, books, anvils, name tags and commands such as /title. Realm names and player names do not allow them.

Bedrock-only colors

Bedrock Edition has extra material colors. Note that §m and §n are colors in Bedrock, not strikethrough and underline.

Minecoin gold (§g) is not available on PlayStation. Several standard colors also use slightly different hex values in Bedrock, for example gray is #C5C5C5 instead of #AAAAAA.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between § and & codes?

The section sign (§) is the code Minecraft itself reads. The ampersand (&) is used by server plugins such as EssentialsX, because § is hard to type and cannot be sent in Java chat. Plugins convert & codes into § codes before the text is shown.

Can I use color codes in Java Edition chat?

Not without a plugin. Typing the § symbol in Java chat disconnects you, even in single player. On servers, chat plugins let players use & codes instead. In vanilla Java, use JSON text such as /tellraw for colored messages.

Why do strikethrough and underline not work in Bedrock?

In Bedrock Edition, §m and §n are not formatting codes. They are material colors (redstone red and copper), so the text turns colored instead of crossed out or underlined.

How do I make text bold and colored at the same time?

Put the color code first, then the formatting code, for example &6&l for bold gold. A color code turns off any formatting that came before it, so add formatting again after every color change.

How do I type the § symbol?

On Windows, hold Alt and type 0167 on the number pad. On a US Mac keyboard, press Option + 6. On Linux, press Ctrl + Shift + U, then type a7 and press Enter. You can also copy it from this page.
